Photographing Activewear So Compression and Fit Are Believable

Black leggings are the hardest garment most small brands will ever photograph. The fabric is dark, matte in some panels and shiny in others, and it only makes sense on a body under tension. Shoot it flat on a white sweep and you get a shapeless tube with no seams, no waistband structure and no evidence of the compression you spent a year sourcing. The customer then buys on price, or does not buy at all, because nothing in your photo distinguishes your product from a five dollar pair. This is a lighting and staging problem before it is an editing problem, and most of it is solvable in a spare room.

Why dark technical fabric loses its detail

A camera records contrast. On black fabric the only contrast available is the difference between where light lands and where it does not, and if you light the garment flat and evenly from the front you have deliberately removed that difference. The seams, the panel joins, the ribbing on a waistband and the raised stitch of a flatlock are all surface geometry a few millimetres deep. They only appear when light rakes across them at a shallow angle.

The fix is to move your main light well off to the side and slightly above, so it skims down the length of the leg rather than hitting it head on. Everything with a raised edge now casts a small shadow and becomes visible. You will lose detail on the far side of the garment, which is what a second light or a plain white board acts as a fill for. A large sheet of foam board propped opposite the light does this well enough that many brands never buy a second light.

Nylon and elastane blends also have directional sheen: they look darker or lighter depending on where you stand relative to the light. Rotate the garment a few degrees between test frames and watch how much the panel structure appears and disappears. That angle, not the exposure, is usually what separates a usable frame from a flat one.

Controlling the sheen on lycra without killing it

Shiny technical fabric reflects the shape of whatever is lighting it. A bare bulb gives you a hard white dot; a large diffused source gives you a long soft band running down the leg. That band is not a flaw. It is the thing that tells a viewer the fabric is smooth and slightly lustrous rather than cotton. The mistake is letting it blow out to pure white, which erases the fabric entirely in that strip.

Get the source large and close, and then pull it back until the highlight has visible gradation from edge to edge. If your camera has a highlight warning, use it: any part of the sheen that clips to pure white has lost its texture permanently and no amount of later editing will recover it. Underexposing slightly and lifting the shadows afterwards is far safer with this kind of fabric than the reverse.

Matte panels and glossy panels in the same garment need the same treatment, so do not try to light them separately. Light for the shiny areas, since they are the unforgiving ones, and let the matte panels sit where they fall. If a colourway is genuinely matte throughout, you can move the light closer and harder for a bit more seam definition.

On-model, mannequin or flat lay: pick by what the garment claims

Flat lays are fast, cheap and consistent across a range, and they are fine for showing colour and print. What they cannot show is fit, which is the entire proposition of a compression garment. Nobody looks at a flat legging and understands where the waistband sits or how the seams track around the thigh. If flat lay is all you have budget for, treat it as the secondary image and not the listing hero.

A dress form or invisible mannequin gets you a repeatable body shape, no scheduling, and a consistent silhouette across an entire range, which makes a listing grid look coherent. The weakness is that a mannequin never moves, so a squat-proof or four way stretch claim is unsupported by anything the viewer can see. Mannequins also do not have a real waist crease, so high rise garments often sit oddly on them.

On-model is the only option that supports fit and stretch claims properly. It also costs the most in coordination. A reasonable compromise many small brands land on is mannequin or flat for the full range and on-model for the two or three bestsellers plus anything with a construction claim attached.

Photographing stretch and opacity honestly

Squat-proof means the fabric does not go sheer under stretch. The only honest way to show that is to photograph it under stretch, from behind, in a deep squat or a hinge, lit strongly enough that if it were going to go sheer you would see it. If your fabric does not pass that test, do not make the claim, and do not photograph it in a way that implies the claim while carefully avoiding the angle that would disprove it.

The same discipline applies to compression. A garment that visibly grips and smooths on the model is showing you something real. A garment styled a size too small so it looks tighter, or pinned at the back to remove slack, is not. Pinning is standard practice in fashion editorial, and it is exactly what makes customers say the item arrived looking nothing like the photo.

If you edit these photos at all, keep the changes to the photograph rather than the product. Correcting a colour cast so the charcoal reads as charcoal, cleaning a scuffed floor, evening out a background: fair. Slimming a body, smoothing away a fabric wrinkle that is genuinely there at that size, or removing a visible seam pucker: not fair, and the returns will tell you so. Shooting the same piece on more than one body

A size guide is a table of numbers that customers do not trust, because they have been burned by them. What builds trust instead is seeing the same garment on two or three different bodies with the sizes stated plainly. It costs one extra hour in a shoot and it answers the single question that drives most activewear returns.

Keep everything else identical between those frames: same position in the room, same light, same distance, same crop, same posture. The variable you are demonstrating is the body and the size, so every other variable has to be held still or the comparison is noise. Shoot each person in the same short sequence of poses, front, side, back and one loaded position, so the set assembles predictably.

State the size worn and, if your models agree, their height. Do not imply that one of these is the correct or default look. The point of the set is that the garment works across a range, which is a stronger sales argument than a single idealised frame anyway.

Making a range look like a range

Customers scroll a grid, and a grid where every thumbnail is framed slightly differently reads as amateur even when each individual photo is good. Lock the camera on a tripod, mark the floor, and do not move either between colourways. Every garment then occupies the same portion of the frame at the same scale, and the grid snaps into order.

Colour accuracy matters more in this category than most, because heather greys, olives and navies all photograph badly under mixed lighting and all generate returns when they arrive looking different. Shoot a grey card or a known white reference in the first frame of every session so you have something objective to correct against later, rather than eyeballing it against a monitor you have been staring at for two hours.

Shoot for the thumbnail as well as the full-size image. Check what your hero frame looks like scaled down to the size a phone actually renders it in a search grid. If the waistband detail you spent forty minutes lighting is invisible at that size, it needs to be a separate close-up image rather than something you hoped the main shot would carry.
