Stainless Steel Pans and the Reflection Problem

A polished saucepan is not a product with a surface. It is a curved mirror that happens to have a handle. Everything you point it at ends up in the picture: the ceiling grid, the window, the cluttered worktop behind you, and you, holding a camera, stretched across the belly of the pan. Most cookware photography advice tells you to control your lighting, which is true but useless on its own. The actual job with polished metal is controlling what surrounds the pan, because the pan will faithfully report all of it. Once you think of the shoot as building a room for the pan to reflect rather than a light to point at it, most of the problems become solvable in a garage with a roll of paper.

Why a curved pan reflects more than you expect

A flat mirror reflects a narrow slice of the room, the bit directly opposite it. A convex surface like the side of a stockpot compresses a very wide angle into a small area, which is why a single pan can show the window, the ceiling, the opposite wall and the photographer all at once. The tighter the curve, the wider the field it gathers. This is why a small ladle bowl is often harder to shoot than a large flat-sided roasting tin.

The practical consequence is that moving the light rarely fixes a bad reflection. If the ceiling is ugly, the pan sees the ceiling regardless of where your softbox is. You have to either change what is opposite the pan or change the angle of the pan so its reflected field points somewhere clean. Tilting a pan five degrees can swap a fluorescent strip for a blank wall in the highlight.

Before you shoot, look at the pan from your intended camera position and name what you can see in it. That inventory is your shot list of problems, and it is faster than shooting, reviewing and wondering why the image looks messy.

Building a surround instead of pointing a light

The classic solution is to put the pan inside a soft, bright, featureless environment so the only thing it can reflect is a clean gradient. At the professional end that is a light tent or a large diffusion panel bent into a curve. At the practical end it is two sheets of white foamboard standing on either side of the pan, a large sheet of tracing paper or a white shower curtain between the light and the subject, and a white card lying flat where the pan can see the floor.

Size matters more than power. A small bright light produces a small bright dot in the metal with a hard edge. A large source at close range produces a long, soft, elongated highlight that reads as sheen rather than glare. If your highlight looks like a headlamp, the source is too small or too far away, not too bright.

Gradients sell metal. A pan lit to be perfectly even looks flat and grey. What makes stainless look like stainless is the transition from a bright reflected panel to a darker reflected area, which describes the curve. Introduce that deliberately: keep one side of the surround white and place a black card on the other side to draw a dark edge down the flank of the pan. That dark edge is what makes the shape read.

Keeping copper looking like copper

Copper is the finish most often ruined in post. It sits close to orange, and both cameras and editors tend to push it there, which turns an expensive rose-toned pan into something that looks like painted terracotta. The giveaway is the highlight: real copper keeps a faintly pink, almost neutral core in its brightest areas with the warm tone concentrated in the mid-tones. If your highlight is orange all the way through, the saturation has been pushed too far.

Set white balance from a genuinely neutral reference in the scene rather than by eye. Put a grey card in one frame at the start of each setup, then remove it and shoot. When you correct the frame from the card, the copper will usually look less orange than you remember it. Trust the card, not your memory of the pan under warm workshop light.

Unlacquered copper also changes over time, developing patina and darkening at the edges. If you are selling a living finish, photograph it as it actually arrives to the customer and say in the copy that it will age. Photographing a highly polished sample and shipping a factory-standard one is a description problem, not a lighting one.

Non-stick, dark interiors and the black hole effect

A matte black non-stick interior absorbs almost all the light you give it, so exposing for the exterior leaves the inside as a featureless void. Buyers reading that void assume they cannot see the coating, and the coating is the whole product. The fix is a secondary light or reflector placed to graze across the interior rather than hit it head on, so the very slight texture of the coating and the curve of the wall become visible.

Shooting slightly off-axis rather than straight down helps too. A dead overhead frame of a black pan is the worst case: no surface variation, no edge definition, no sense of depth. Angle down at roughly forty-five degrees and the interior wall catches a soft gradient that immediately reads as a bowl rather than a disc.

Do not brighten the coating so far that it looks grey or reflective. A non-stick surface is genuinely dark and slightly velvety, and a customer who receives a darker pan than the picture showed is a customer with a legitimate complaint. Aim for the darkest tone that still shows structure.

The supporting frames a serious cookware buyer wants

The hero shot sells the look. It is the supporting frames that answer the questions that stop a purchase. For cookware, those questions are almost always about capacity, base construction, handle attachment and oven compatibility, and none of them are visible in a three-quarter beauty shot.

Shoot a straight-down frame of the empty interior so the buyer can judge the usable width and see the base. Shoot the pan tipped to show the thickness of the base, because a cook comparing a three-millimetre disc bottom to a full-clad five-layer body is comparing the only thing that matters to them. Shoot the handle join from close range, showing rivets or welds honestly. And shoot the pan on a hob so the relationship between the base diameter and a standard burner is readable.

What editing can and cannot fix

Retouching is normal in cookware photography. Removing a dust speck, cleaning a fingerprint on the bench, evening out a background seam, calming a reflection of a light stand: all of that changes the photograph, not the pan.

What crosses the line is anything that changes what the buyer is judging. Do not shift a stainless finish warmer or cooler because it suits your site design. Do not smooth away a seam that exists on the real product. Do not stretch a frame so a pan looks deeper than it is, or present it in a way that implies a size it does not have. Colour and scale are the two things a home cook cannot verify until the box arrives, which is why they must be right.

The test is simple: if the customer unpacked the pan next to a print of your image, would anything surprise them? If the only surprise is that your kitchen is tidier, you are fine. If it involves the finish, the size or the construction, reshoot rather than edit.

Can I photograph stainless cookware without a light tent?

Yes. A window with a sheer curtain over it acts as a large soft source, and two sheets of white foamboard either side of the pan will do the job of the tent walls. What you cannot skip is controlling what sits opposite the pan, because that is what appears in the metal. A dark cloth thrown over a cluttered shelf behind the camera often improves the shot more than any light does.

How do I stop my own reflection appearing in the pan?

Either shoot from further back with a longer lens so you occupy a smaller part of the reflected field, or cut a hole in a large white card and shoot through it so the pan reflects the card instead of you. Tilting the pan a few degrees so its reflected field points away from the camera position also works, and costs nothing.

Is it acceptable to remove scratches from a display sample?

If the scratch is on the sample you shot but every unit shipped is new and unmarked, removing it makes the image more representative, not less. If the scratch is a normal characteristic of the product as delivered, leave it. The rule is that the photograph should match what arrives in the box.
